Chapter 9: Il Condizionale passato

The past conditional is used to express something you would have, could have or should have done in the past. It is used to express:

  • An unfulfilled wish: Giampaolo avrebbe studiato architettura, ma i genitori lo hanno costretto a studiare economia.
  • An opinion on a past action: Secondo me, sareste stati più felici a Bologna, ma avete preferito vivere a Milano.
  • An unconfirmed information: A seguito delle indagini, i costruttori avrebbero edificato in una zona proibita.
  • A future action in relation to a past action (future in the past): Luca diceva sempre che sarebbe andato a vivere in campagna.

The past conditional is formed with the conditional present of either essere or avere, and the past participle of the main verb.
It is a compound form, and it follows the same rules as other compound forms, like the passato prossimo and trapassato prossimo.
